Orphan Black Hole Puzzles Astronomers

Quasars are the brightest objects in the Universe, spewing out enormous amounts of energy making them visible across vast distances. Astronomers have long believed that quasars are in fact super-massive black holes, sitting in the middle of galaxies, sucking in surrounding matter and then emitting radiation. Previous observations of quasars have supported the theory that they are always associated with massive host galaxies, but a newly observed "orphan" quasar, reported in Nature, seems to contradict this theory.

The evolutionary benefits of crying

Crying is known to be a symptom of pain or stress, but an evolutionary biologist from Tel Aviv University (TAU) suggests that tears are also an evolution-based mechanism to bring people closer together and make interpersonal relationships stronger.

"Crying is a highly evolved behavior," explains Dr. Oren Hasson of TAU's Department of Zoology. "Tears give clues and reliable information about submission, needs and social attachments between one another. My research is trying to answer what the evolutionary reasons are for having emotional tears."

Hasson's analysis suggests that by blurring vision, tears lower defenses and reliably function as signals of submission, a cry for help, and even in a mutual display of attachment and as a group display of cohesion.

How to communicate with extraterrestrials?

howtorespond.gif

Scientists are studying the best ways to compose messages meant for alien eyes in case we ever do get the chance to communicate with extraterrestrials.

If mankind ever does receive a signal from extraterrestrials, one of our first decisions may be what to write back.

As director of Interstellar Message Composition at the SETI Institute, psychologist Douglas Vakoch has thought a lot about this question.

"The challenge of constructing any interstellar message is trying to anticipate what you and your recipient have in common," Vakoch said. "One thing we can guarantee is they won't be native speakers of English or Swahili or Chinese."

And the same problem applies to any incoming message to Earth.

Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

glue.jpg

Glue is made up of a substance that sticks to things and a solvent that keeps it liquid until you want it to stick. When you put glue on a piece of paper, the solvent gradually evaporates until the glue becomes sticky. When the glue is in a bottle, there is a space inside the bottle above the liquid that is full of air. So why doesn't the glue dry out? Well there's a limit to the amount of solvent that can evaporate to fill the space in the bottle. Once the space is full of solvent gas, no more solvent evaporates from the glue and the glue stays runny.

Science: Sail - backed dinos had semiaquatic lifestyle

Paleontologists may have solved the mystery of how spinosaurs and tyrannosaurs - two dinosaur groups that included many large, fierce predators - could have lived in the same regions at the same time. A new study suggests that, like many pairs of surly neighbors, they simply avoided each other.

48 hour guiness record charity sing for grandmother

karen-davy.jpg

Grandmother Karen Davy managed to sing for 48 hours straight to set a Guiness world record and raise money for charity.

Travelers at Auckland airport were serenaded from Monday to Wednesday last week as the Dolly Parton impersonator warmed up with humming, fortified herself with soup in the 5 minute break she was allowed per hour, and finished with a sore throat but over $7000 in support. The funds raised go towards caring for New Zealand children with kidney disorders and their families through Kidney Kids.

After her amazing 48 hour marathon sing, coping paperwork to send to Guiness world records, and promoting her favourite charity, grandmother Karen said simply, “I’m really, really tired”
